You may be wondering why we’ve chosen 4.5* teams but the answer is really very simple. If you’re going to play as a 5* team whilst there are many teams everyone knows about them. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all absolute powerhouses, the three best teams in the game. Chelsea, PSG and Manchester City are probably a step below them whilst Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund offer pacey options.

Picking a 5* team is a safe bet but at the same time it is also a boring bet and one we tend not to make too often. We prefer to look beyond the elite group of teams for our games and as such you can often have far more enjoyable games. We’ve picked out seven sides who are all 4.5* and are all great funt o play with, here they are in no particular order.

Zenit St Petersburg
CSKA Moscow always steal the FIFA headlines because of Ahmed Musa and Seydou Doumbia but there is no doubt that Zenit have the more complete squad, and the better star player. Hulk is a force of nature on FIFA 16 with 85 pace, 87 shot and 86 physical. Play him on the right or through the middle, he’ll cause anyone problems.
Elsewhere the team is full of 80+ players like Axel Witsel, Ezequiel Garay, Oleg Shatov and Danny. Zenit will catch a lot of people by surprise and whilst they’re focusing on how to stop Hulk you can use the rest of your team to rip them to shreds.

Is there a better team in FIFA 16 right now? Okay that might be going a little far but at the time of writing Napoli are simply incredible in the game. Nearly every player is getting a boost at the moment and the front four is without a doubt the best in this list. Gonzalo Higuain, Lorenzo Insigne, Marek Hamsik and either Jose Callejon or Dries Mertens. Pace, power and a lot of ability from distance.

In a game where patience and possession football works better Napoli tear up the rulebook and do things their own way. This team is designed to be played with at breakneck speed, don’t take your foot off the throttle and overwhelm your opponent with wave after wave of attacks.

If you want a fast team with a number of talented young players who can thrive in a number of different formations then Valencia are the team for you. Like Thohir at Inter Peter Lim’s investment into Valencia has made them one of the exciting in Europe.

Thanks to Lim’s connections with super-agent Jorge Mendes Valencia has some of the best young prospects in Europe and a great team in FIFA 16.

Paco Alcacer, Sofiane Feghouli and Pablo Piatti lead the front line but you could also use Rodrigo De Paul, Alvaro Negredo and Rodrigo if you like. Dani Parejo is a fine playmaker whilst despite losing Nicolas Otamendi they still have a great defence with Jose Gaya getting a massive boost from FIFA 15. 3-3-1-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 3-4-3? They all work well with Valencia.

Athletic Club
A few years ago Athletic had one of the best teams in FIFA outside of the top group but sadly as is the way with smaller teams they’ve lost a lot of their stars. This year they’ve got a solid team and whilst the high-intensity football before remains this team favours a more passing game with the talent in the centre of midfield.

Make sure you use the wings though, Markel Susaeta, Ibai Gomez and Iker Muniain are all good crossers of the ball and in Aritz Aduriz you have one of the best headers of the ball in the game with a stat of 95. Go direct or go short, you can do both with Athletic.

Inter Milan
Ever since Erick Thohir took over at Inter Milan the club continue to have extremely interesting transfer windows and this summer was no different. Stevan Jovetic, Ivan Perisic, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Alex Telles have all arrived whilst FIFA favourite Jonathan Biabiany is back as well. The squad make-up looks good and it is no surprise Inter have aspirations for the title this season.

This team is not designed for pretty football though, this is all about bullying the opposition off the park. Gary Medel, Felipe Melo, Gary Medel and Fredy Guarin are all no-nonsense midfielders and Mauro Icardi is an absolute nightmare to play against. The defence is tough as well and if your opponent gets through they’ll have done very well.

Towards the end of FIFA 15’s lifecycle we noticed more and more people playing online with Lyon, a real favourite of ours and it was probably as more and more clubs started to look at Alexandre Lacazette and Nabil Fekir. In FIFA 16 both players have got boosts, up to 84 and 79 respectively. The fact that Lacazette now has 85+ for pace, shooting and dribbling is just ridiculous and he is one of the best forwards in the game.

On top of that Lyon have added pacey forward Claudio Beauvue, who has got a jump in his stats, playmaker Mathieu Valbuena and former Manchester United full-back Rafael. Corentin Tolisso, Samuel Umtiti and Anthony Lopes have all been taken up, if you want a team to play a diamond with Lyon are the side for you.

Bayer Leverkusen
Slightly radical choice given that in the Bundesliga everyone’s go-to choice has been Dortmund for so long but this year they’ve got a fantastic squad. The starting XI is simply a joy across the pitch but the undoubted jewel of the crown is Turkish No.10 Hakan Calhanoglu. The best free-kick taker in the game with excellent long-shots, a fantastic player.

Karim Bellarabi and Kevin Kampl are fantastic wingers whilst few players in the game offer better protection in front of the back four than Lars Bender. Wendell is a very promising left-back and of course Bernd Leno is a brilliant keeper. Up front you have an interesting choice between the power and experience of Stefan Kiessling or the pace and movement of Javier Hernandez. We normally use the latter but either work to be honest.
